You know that ice-breaker question:

WHO WOULD BE YOU IN A MOVIE ABOUT YOUR LIFE?

Well, when that happens for real it’s still a lot of fun—but also kind of terrifying.

Because there are a zillion decisions you have to make along the way, and you’re not qualified to make any of them, but everyone just ignores that little detail and makes you decide anyhow. Eeek.

First the agents call, a handful of entertainment attorneys, and then the producers. And that’s when I started googling who does what in Hollywood, and also why is there not a picture book crash-course in how Hollywood works? (If you decide to write one just PM me when you get the section called: Don’t make the 75 mistakes that one girl made.)

After talking to more than sixty TV and film production companies, YES I SAID SIXTY, I decided a feature film would have the most impact, and that we would hold the TV show until after the film. Then I changed my mind. Many times. But to save space here and your sanity, we’ll skip that drama and just pretend I was rock solid on this order from the start.

What was actually rock solid (besides my level of shoulder tension) was selecting Escape Artists as the producers. Because: WOW. So much good stuff in their portfolio. And the film that really pushed me over the edge was obviously, The Pursuit of Happyness with Will Smith.

Right out of the gate, these producers answered that cocktail party game with an A-LIST ACTRESS interested in not only being attached to the film as me, but as a co-producer, which would land a large studio.

They had worked with her before and called me one day when they handed my book to her over lunch. Yeah, my life is that cool. Ok, ok, the producer’s life is that cool. Close enough.

WHO IS THIS AMAZING ACTRESS?! I can’t tell you. Infuriating, right? And I don’t even understand all the red tape of why myself. (Because you still haven’t written that picture book to explain Hollywood to me. GET ON THAT!)

So this is me, impatiently holding my tongue. But also dropping hints often. And also hoping it all falls together quickly as opposed to falling apart, which is something I’m told Hollywood things often do.

Kate: What is that concrete tool called that Jada’s holding here?

Me: No idea. We called it her pie server. But Goggle says it’s a trowel. Can we PLEASE just go with pie server?

Kate: No.

I’ve written more than a whole handful of books (EIGHT!), but screenwriting is a brand-new game. The talented screenplay writer my producers selected to get things rolling, Kate Angelo, wasn’t who I expected. She was known for her roles writing comedy, Will and Grace, Sex Tape with Cameron Diaz, The Backup Plan with Jennifer Lopez. But she was itching to write a drama, and she was freaking perfect to work on this with me. I simply adore her and her writing brilliance.

Kate and I chatted by phone, email, and text throughout the first draft. Then things got even crazy, with daily convos when we addressed notes from producers, the studio, and the actress and her business partner. We did all of the above lots times. To save space just read this paragraph like six times. Maybe seven.

The stakes are high here. And re-plotting your real life for the big screen isn't for the faint of heart.

You have to toss your ego in the trash can, because this story is no longer about you. You have to embrace a larger mission of releasing a particular mindset or call to action into the world. And only the bits of your story that fit that mission get to be in the film.

Going in, I believed Hollywood would amp up my story, toss in some helicopters and a James Bond or two. But in my case, the film version is a smaller, simpler, more focused interpretation of a family rebuilding their lives. (Sorry Mr. Bond—I’ll fit you in the next one.)

AND MY (MINIMAL) BIAS ASIDE,...

Our script is so over-the-top amazing it should win every award immediately, like before we even go into production they might as well just start printing ‘RISE’ on all the statue things, because this film is everything the world needs right now.

What's next? The worst thing ever. The thing I was not designed to do in any way, shape, or form. Waiting.

All the moving parts of that big Hollywood machine have to line up to make movie magic.

*taps foot impatiently and runs in circles*

WE HOPE TO GO INTO PRODUCTION AT THE TOP OF 2020.
